Gefluchten Atarah Style #507 in 4.5 or 5.5 Inch Widths

Design #507 gives you a woven gefluchten band on a 38 inch length, its braid repeat setting it apart from the #101 and #501 lines. Sewn along the collar of a tallis it does what all the gefluchten bands do — adds structure and texture where the plain factory atarah offers neither — and it holds that shape rather than flattening out after a few months of folding.

The choice is between 4.5 and 5.5 inches wide. That inch matters more in person than it does on paper. The 4.5 is the restrained option and the one to take for a bar mitzvah bochur, or for anyone whose tallis is on the smaller side where a wide band crowds the shoulders. The 5.5 is the fuller cut and the more common request among grown men wearing a full wool tallis. Both run the same 38 inch collar length.

If you are replacing an existing atarah rather than dressing a new tallis, measure the old one first. Matching the width you are used to is usually the right instinct.
