Description
The flat weave rather than the round, in black, and the widest range of sizes carried. A gartel, hagura in Hebrew, is worn at davening chiefly though not exclusively by chassidim, and the flat version lies closer against the kapoteh than a round one does.
The size number is the number of strings across the width, so it is a direct measure of how broad the band is. The thinnest sizes are what men call the mincha and maariv gartel, kept for the weekday davening where something quick and unobtrusive is wanted, and they come without the fringed edges. From size 4 upward the standard long fringes hang down at both ends. The range runs 0, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26, 28 and 30, so the same weave covers a boy's first gartel and a wide Shabbos band.
Most men who wear a gartel end up owning more than one: a narrow one that lives in a jacket pocket for weekday mincha, and a wider one that only comes out for Shabbos, Yom Tov and the Yomim Noraim.

- Size 4 and up have the standard long fringes hanging down
- Size #4 consists of 4 strings in the width and so on)
