Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a siddur and a machzor?
A siddur covers daily, Shabbos and general tefillos through the year. A machzor is for one specific Yom Tov — Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Pesach, Shavuos or Sukkos — and contains the piyutim and additions for that day, which a siddur does not.

Do I buy machzorim as a set or individually?
Both are available. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are usually bought as a Yamim Noraim pair. The shalosh regalim machzorim — Pesach, Shavuos and Sukkos — are commonly bought one at a time as each Yom Tov comes around.

Which nusach should I choose?
Match your shul and your family. Ashkenaz and Sefard are the two most common in Lakewood; Edot HaMizrach follows Sephardic communities; Ari is used in Chassidishe circles. School lists usually state the nusach, and if yours does not, ask before ordering — nusach is the one thing that cannot be exchanged away.

What does interlinear mean, and is it better?
Interlinear places the English directly beneath each Hebrew word, which helps someone still building fluency follow along in real time. A standard facing-page translation reads more naturally as English. Neither is better — interlinear is a learning tool, facing-page is for understanding.

What size should I buy?
Full size for home or a fixed seat in shul. Pocket size for travel, work and weekday minyan. Large print is worth considering for older users and is easy to overlook until it is needed.

Can a siddur or machzor be personalised?
Embossing is available on many editions and is a common bar mitzvah, wedding and school gift. Personalised items are not returnable, so please confirm the spelling before we run it.
