What does a boy need for his bar mitzvah?
Tefillin, a tallis if your custom is to wear one before marriage, a tallis and tefillin bag, and a siddur. Tefillin are the significant purchase and the one worth choosing in person — see tefillin for the tiers.

How do I choose tefillin?
The main decision is the batim: Gassos, Dakkos or Peshutim, which differ in construction, durability and price. All are kosher when written and assembled properly. Given the cost and the lifespan, almost everyone chooses these in store.

What size tzitzis do I need?
Sizing is by age and chest measurement and varies by manufacturer, so check the chart on the product page rather than assuming. Between sizes, size up.

Do mezuzah cases include the scroll?
Usually not — case and klaf are normally sold separately, and the klaf is the part that must be written by a sofer. Check the product page, and if you need both, tell us and we will make sure you leave with a complete mezuzah rather than an empty case.

How often should tefillin and mezuzos be checked?
A commonly cited practice is twice in seven years for both, and sooner if exposed to moisture or heat. Checking is done by a sofer.

Can these be personalised?
Bags and some accessories, yes — name and date embroidered, with no minimum order. Allow 10 to 14 days plus shipping. Tefillin, tallisos and klafim are not personalised items.

Should I buy these online or in store?
Kippot, bags, tzitzis and siddurim order perfectly well online. Tefillin, tallisos and mezuzah klafim are worth coming in for — they are significant purchases and staff can walk you through the differences properly.
