Description
Design 251 sets a gold embroidered centre panel into the black velvet, bounded on all four sides so the velvet frames it rather than the other way round. The panel is worked densely enough to hold its shape after years of handling, and the design does not rely on fine detail that would blur as the thread settles.
Three sizes: the 10.5 by 10 inch bar mitzvah bag, the 14 by 14 large talis bag and the 16 by 16 extra large. The centre panel construction is the practical reason this design lasts — the parts of a bag that take the most wear are the corners and the seams, and here they are plain velvet, not embroidery. For daily shul use over a decade that matters more than it sounds.
Bencher covers and prayer booklet covers are both made in design 251, so the panel can be repeated in pieces used at the table.
