Black Velvet and Crushed Velvet Tallis & Tefillin Bag #530

There is no thread work on design 530 at all. The face is built from two materials instead: smooth black velvet panelled against black crushed velvet, so the whole bag is one colour and the difference between the two surfaces is what you see. Crushed velvet breaks the light unevenly while the smooth velvet holds it flat, and that contrast is the design.

It is made in the bar mitzvah size at 10.5 by 10 inches, the large talis bag at 14 by 14 and the extra large at 16 by 16. An unembroidered bag is often the choice for a man who wants something plain for weekdays and keeps an embroidered bag for Shabbos, and the two-texture construction gives it more presence than a flat black bag would.

Design 530 is also made as a matzah cover and in Pesach linens, so the same black-on-black treatment can carry through to the seder table.
