Design #490 puts its embroidery low. A swirl runs across the bottom of the bag rather than sitting centred on the face, which leaves the upper panel clean and gives the whole piece a weightier, grounded look. Worked here on faux leather, the swirl has a smooth surface to travel across, so the line stays crisp instead of sinking into a pile.
Four sizes are offered. The single tefillin bag at 8.5 x 9.5 is made without stones — a plain, practical version for a man who keeps his tefillin separate from his tallis. The bar mitzvah size is 10 x 10.5, the large talis bag is 14 x 14, and the extra large is 16 x 16 for a full wool tallis.
Faux leather is the choice for someone who wants a wipeable surface rather than velvet. It does not crush, it does not hold dust in the nap, and it takes the daily trip to shul in a car and back without looking tired by Elul.
