Velvet Tallis & Tefillin Bag with Bottom Swirl Embroidery, Design #490

This is the #490 bottom swirl worked on velvet rather than faux leather. The change of ground changes the design: on velvet the embroidered swirl catches light against the pile, so the curve along the base of the bag has more depth and less of the flat graphic quality it has on a leather surface. The top of the face stays open and undecorated.

The size list runs from a single tefillin bag at 8.5 x 9.5, made without stones, up through the bar mitzvah 10 x 10.5, the large talis bag at 14 x 14, and the extra large 16 x 16. Most men buying for themselves take the 14 x 14; the small tefillin bag is generally a second purchase, bought to keep tefillin out of the tallis bag entirely.

Velvet remains the traditional choice for a talis bag and it still looks right on a shtender next to a shtender full of them. It is the version to take if the faux leather reads too modern for the shul.
