Description
Design #1055 belongs to Malchut's custom line, the range where the embroidery is worked directly into the body of the bag rather than applied as a separate patch. The result is a face that stays flat and even after years of being carried to shul and back, with none of the puckering you get on cheaper bags. It is a middle-of-the-range number: substantial, carefully finished, and not so ornate that it draws attention away from the man carrying it.
The same design is cut in three sizes. Bar mitzvah, marked BMX, measures 10.5" x 10" and is sized for tefillin plus a bochur's first tallis koton or light tallis. The large talis bag is 14" x 14", the size most men use for a standard woolen tallis. The extra large is 16" x 16", which is what you want for a big tallis or for a man who does not like to fold tightly.
Because Malchut runs the same design number across sizes, a father and son can carry the same pattern in two different cuts. That is worth knowing before a bar mitzvah, when the bag is often bought at the same time as the tefillin themselves.
