Velvet Tallis & Tefillin Bag, Custom Velvet Collection #1056

This one comes from Malchut's Custom Velvet collection, and the velvet is the point. The body is a deep, heavy velvet rather than leather, embroidered over the pile so the thread catches light against the nap. Two colourways are offered: black velvet with grey, or grey with grey, the second being the more restrained of the pair. Velvet gives a warmer, older look than leather and is the traditional choice for a man who wants his bag to sit with his machzor on Yom Tov rather than look modern.

The bag is made as a bar mitzvah size at 10.5" x 10", a large talis bag at 14" x 14", or an extra large at 16" x 16". The bar mitzvah cut is the one bought alongside a first pair of tefillin; the two larger cuts are for a man with a full tallis, the 16" x 16" being the safer pick if the tallis is thick wool.

Velvet does need slightly more care than leather. Kept out of the rain and brushed occasionally, it holds its colour and its pile for many years, which is why these bags are so often the ones that get passed down.
