#V1048 is one of the velvet designs that works as well at the small end as at the large. The embroidery is laid out so it holds together on a 10.5 x 10 bar mitzvah bag and still fills the face of a 16 x 16 — not every design number manages both, which is why this one gets ordered for boys and for their fathers.
The bar mitzvah cut is built around a first set of tefillin and a boy's tallis. The 14 x 14 large talis bag is the middle option and the one most men choose. The 16 x 16 extra large is for a full-size wool tallis, and it is also the size to take if you carry a machzor in the same bag over Yomim Noraim.
Velvet with this much thread work is usually treated as a Shabbos bag. If it is going to be a bar mitzvah present, order early enough that the stitching is finished well before the aliyah.
