Velvet Tallis & Tefillin Bag, Custom Embroidery #V2035

Deep pile velvet under dense embroidery is the whole construction of #V2035. The stitching is packed close enough that the design carries weight, and the pile beneath it gives the thread somewhere to sit — the two together are why velvet has stayed the standard material for a good talis bag long after other fabrics came and went.

Three sizes are cut from this number, up to 16 x 16. The bar mitzvah bag at 10.5 x 10 is the boy's size; the 14 x 14 large talis bag is the adult standard; the 16 x 16 extra large is the one for a full wool tallis or a bag that has to carry a machzor as well. Tefillin are not the constraint in any of them.

If the bag is going to be a gift, the 14 x 14 is the safe default for an adult — it is the size a man is least likely to outgrow or regret.
