Three sizes are cut to the standard custom velvet dimensions: 10.5" x 10" bar mitzvah, 14" x 14" large talis and 16" x 16" extra large. Tefillin alone fit comfortably in the smallest. Tallis and tefillin together want the 14x14 or larger. The 16x16 is the choice for a big tallis or for a man who never folds his tallis particularly small.

If you are buying for a bochur who will be putting on tefillin for the first time, remember that the bag will be carried through a full year of school, camp and travel before it settles into a routine. The heavier construction of the custom line is genuinely useful for that first year.
