Ram's Horn Shofar, 11 to 13 Inches with Rabbanut Hechsher (#2)
Pickup at both Lakewood stores
Description
Eleven to thirteen inches is the length most households end up owning. It is listed as small to medium, and it suits more baalei tokeah than any other size in the range: long enough to give a full-bodied sound, short enough that a man without years of practice can hold the note through a tekiah gedolah without running out.
Made in Israel from a ram's horn, under the hechsher of the Rabbanut of Israel. Horn varies from piece to piece — colour runs from pale cream through to dark brown depending on the animal, and no two curves are the same — so the shofar that arrives is its own object rather than one of a matched run. The certification is the part that does not vary, and for most buyers it is the part that matters.
If you are buying one shofar for the house and not blowing for a large kehilla, this is generally the right length to settle on. The small bag at 13 by 10 inches fits it; the medium at 16 by 10.5 leaves it room.
