Ram's Horn Shofar, Extra Long 17 to 19 Inches (#5)
Pickup at both Lakewood stores
Description
Seventeen to nineteen inches. This is the long end of the Rabbanut-certified range and it is bought for one reason: a fuller, deeper sound that carries in a big room. A large shul with a high ceiling swallows a short horn, and this length does not get swallowed.
It is described as medium to large, which understates it. At nineteen inches you are handling a serious piece of horn and it wants a baal tokeah with the breath to fill it properly. In the right hands the difference against a thirteen-inch is audible from the back of the beis medrash without anybody straining to hear it.
Made in Israel from a ram's horn, under the hechsher of the Rabbanut of Israel. At this length it should live in a bag rather than on a shelf — the medium shofar bag at 16 by 10.5 inches is the practical size — and it should be kept away from direct heat, which is what dries horn out and opens cracks along the grain over the years.
