Description
Thirteen to fifteen inches, listed as the large size. This is a real step up in body from the eleven-to-thirteen: more horn means more air moving through it and the tone drops accordingly. Men who blow for a minyan rather than for a family generally want to be at this length or above it.
Ram's horn from Israel under the hechsher of the Rabbanut, left natural rather than put through the polishing that the C3, B4 and A5 numbers get. Unpolished horn keeps the ridging and the colour variation the animal grew, and a good many people prefer it precisely for that reason — it looks like what it is, and it does not pretend otherwise.
Bear the length in mind when choosing a bag for it. At fifteen inches you are at the outer limit of a small 13 by 10 bag, and the medium at 16 by 10.5 is the safer purchase of the two.
