Ram's Horn Shofar, 15 to 17 Inches in a Natural Finish (#4)
Pickup at both Lakewood stores
Description
Fifteen to seventeen inches in a natural finish — the horn as it came, with its own ridging and colouring, not buffed down to a smooth face. It is described as a medium; in practice it is a substantial shofar and one of the more common lengths standing at the amud on Rosh Hashanah morning.
The extra length gives a deeper, rounder tone than the short horns and holds a tekiah gedolah longer once the baal tokeah knows how to work it. It also takes more breath, which is worth knowing if you are buying for someone who has not blown before: a man learning on a seventeen-inch horn will struggle where he would have managed on an eleven.
Made in Israel, with the hechsher of the Rabbanut. For storage, the medium shofar bag at 16 by 10.5 inches is the size that takes this length comfortably; the small at 13 by 10 will not do it.
