Description
Under 24 centimetres, which works out at seven to nine inches, this is the smallest ram's horn in the range and it is meant for a child. A boy can get a sound out of it with the breath he actually has, and that is the difference between him blowing shofar all through Elul and him giving up after three tries on his father's.
It comes from Israel and carries a hechsher from the Rabbanut. Every ram's horn differs in colour and curve, so the one that arrives will not be identical to the next — that is the nature of horn rather than a fault in it. The small size is also what makes it the practical one to pass around a Rosh Hashanah table, or to keep in the car during the month of Elul.
Fathers commonly buy one of these alongside a full-size horn. The boys have something of their own to practise on for a month, and the good shofar stays where it belongs until Rosh Hashanah morning.
